The Sports and Cultural Center Marie-José Perec and Joséphine Baker, by Onze04 Architectes, received the 2025 Architecture MasterPrize Architectural Design of the Year distinction. The pairing of sport and culture in the project’s program offers an important point of departure: civic architecture is judged not only by form, but also by the different kinds of public life it can accommodate.
A mixed-use public building asks architects to reconcile different rhythms. Sports facilities often require durability, clear circulation and specialized environmental conditions; cultural programs may need flexibility, gathering space and a sense of welcome. The quality of the design lies partly in how these demands are negotiated without turning the building into a collection of disconnected rooms.
For Luminaries, the most revealing documentation would include plans, circulation diagrams, photographs during use, and an account of how the design serves its surrounding community. A striking exterior image can introduce a project; understanding how it works requires much more.
