Designing the Contemporary Workplace

Symbolplus Office, designed by SYMBOLPLUS INC. in Japan, received Interior Design of the Year at the 2025 Architecture MasterPrize. Its recognition invites a wider question about office interiors: what makes a workplace more than a carefully staged visual environment?

The best office design must support competing needs—concentration and exchange, privacy and openness, consistency and change. Material choices and spatial organization also communicate an institution’s character, sometimes more convincingly than graphics or branding.
