At Deir el-Bahari, architecture and landscape have been in conversation for millennia. The funerary temple of Hatshepsut rises through terraces against a dramatic cliff face, its ceremonial sequence shaped by the sun. Illuminating it after dark demands exceptional restraint.
VBNB Lighting’s approach follows the monument’s architectural hierarchy through layers of grazing light and shadow. The designers worked with archaeologists and developed specially made sandstone bases that support fixtures without drilling into ancient floors.
The achievement lies not simply in revealing detail but in knowing what to leave in darkness. A heritage monument is not a blank canvas for spectacle. Here, light becomes a way of reading history while preserving the material evidence that makes that history tangible.
