The American dream has been pictured for generations: a promise of security, opportunity, and a better life, often communicated through the polished language of advertising. Photographer Thomas Broening’s The End of the Dream turns toward the tensions within that familiar visual promise.
The series received the 2023 International Photography Awards’ highest professional honor, International Photographer of the Year. It also won Advertising Photographer of the Year, a pairing that makes its critical premise especially compelling.
Advertising photography is exceptionally skilled at creating desire. It can make a product, a lifestyle, or an imagined future feel almost tangible. When those same visual tools are used to examine disappointment or disillusionment, the effect can be unsettling. The viewer recognizes the language of persuasion but encounters a less reassuring story.
That tension opens a broader conversation about how photographs shape collective expectations. Images do not merely reflect what a society values; they can help construct those values, repeating certain ideals until they begin to feel inevitable. A project that questions the ideal also questions the pictures that sustained it.
Broening’s work suggests that the border between commercial image-making and cultural commentary is more porous than it first appears. Technical control, visual clarity, and a carefully composed scene can serve critique as effectively as promotion.
The title, The End of the Dream, does not need to be read as a final verdict. It can also be understood as an invitation to examine whose dreams were represented, whose experiences were left outside the frame, and what happens when a powerful national image no longer feels convincing.
The most enduring photographs often reveal something about the stories we tell ourselves. Here, the familiar promise becomes the subject of inquiry rather than its unquestioned conclusion.
