Nanushka’s Pre-Fall 2019 collection, led by founder and designer Sandra Sandor with Ahinaa Perjesi, was named Fashion Design of the Year at the 2018 International Design Awards. The Budapest-based label designs its clothing in Hungary, produces it in Europe and shows its mainline collection at New York Fashion Week.
The collection extends the brand’s signature “modern nomadic” aesthetic with inspiration from 1970s interior design. Relaxed, elongated silhouettes and cosy knits use texture to revisit tradition. Soft, deep earth tones and dusty pastels set the mood, punctuated by snake print and hints of sorbet pink, so that classic pieces carry subtly new details.
The award arrived as the label was formalising its environmental commitments: in May 2018 Nanushka became a partner of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to develop sustainable methods and support the circular economy. The collection raises a question that many growing brands now face: how a recognisable, commercially successful aesthetic can evolve alongside a more responsible way of making clothes.
